Cool Hamster Facts!

  • Hamsters don’t smell, and neither do their poop. However, their urine smells (I know this from experience). Hamsters are very clean and go through a cleaning ritual several times a day. When hamsters are scared, they are likely to wash their face.
  • Roborovskii hamsters are the smallest type of hamster and only grow to about two inches!
  • Winter White hamsters’ coats turn white in the winter.
  • Chinese hamsters have longer tails than the other types of hamster to help them climb in China.
  • Some people say hamsters are nocturnal, but others disagree because many types of hamsters are awake at other times. Many wake up in the evening, such as Campbell’s Russian hamsters. Oreo is sometimes up at 7:40 AM, right before I go out to catch the school bus!
  • Hamsters are known for stuffing food in their cheeks and then storing the food in burrows underground. In a book, I read that when there was a famine in Asia or Europe (I forgot which), the people dug up hamster burrows and survived on that food!
  • You can control whether a pregnant hamster will have boys or girls. If you keep the hamster in a warmer temperature, she will have more more boys, and if you keep her in a cooler environment, she will probably have more girls.
  • While nursing hamster babies, if the mother hamster is stressed she might eat or kill her babies.
  • After about 4 weeks, if offspring hamsters do not leave, their mother will get territorial and kill them.
  • Hamsters can eat dog biscuits, though watch out! Some dog biscuits are high in fat.
